Android Malware Targeting Banking Apps

July 8, 2025

A new strain of Android malware called Godfather is targeting trusted banking apps, including ours. Once it gets on your phone, it can mimic real apps, steal your login info, intercept security codes, and drain your account fast.

The worst part? You probably won’t see it coming. It hides behind fake updates and unofficial downloads, then runs quietly in the background. When you open your banking app, it may display a login screen that looks completely legitimate, but it isn’t.

The good news? You can stop it before it starts.

How to Protect Yourself from Mobile Malware Like Godfather:

  • Download apps only from trusted sources: Stick to official stores like Google Play, Samsung Galaxy Store, or Amazon Appstore. Avoid third-party stores and never install apps from a link or pop-up.
  • Turn off “Install from Unknown Sources”: This setting opens the door for malware. To disable: Settings > Apps & notifications > Special app access > Install unknown apps
  • Tap each app and turn off “Allow from this source.”
  • Turn on Google Play Protect: This built-in security tool scans for harmful apps. Make sure it’s enabled in your device’s security settings.
  • Review app permissions: Be cautious about what permissions you allow, especially anything that asks for Accessibility Services or seems excessive for what the app does.
  • Avoid suspicious links: Don’t click links in unexpected texts or emails. Even if they look legitimate.
  • Enable biometric security: Use fingerprint or facial recognition to lock your device and approve sensitive actions.
  • Use strong passwords and 2FA: Two-factor authentication adds a vital layer of protection, even against malware that tries to bypass it.
  • Keep your phone and apps updated: Install updates as soon as they’re available to patch known vulnerabilities.
  • Never share MFA codes: If you get a code you didn’t request, do not share it and call us immediately at 800.736.4500.
  • Check your accounts often: Regularly monitor your financial accounts for unusual activity. If something seems off, let us know right away.

A little prevention goes a long way.

Hackers are counting on you being too busy, distracted, or trusting. Let’s prove them wrong. Stay alert. Stay updated. If anything seems a bit off, don’t wait, give us a call. We’re always here to help.
