International Credit Union Day: Building financial health for a brighter tomorrow

Today marks the 73rd Anniversary of International Credit Union Day, an annual event that celebrates the impact and achievements of the credit union movement.

Why do we call it a “credit union movement”? Because while we offer common banking services like savings and checking accounts, auto loans, and mortgages, credit unions are a whole lot more than just a place to stash your cash or get a loan. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide an alternative to for-profit financial institutions around the globe.

Our not-for-profit nature means we invest our earnings in helping Members meet their financial goals through lower loan rates, financial education and better service. What’s more, we allow Members to participate directly in our cooperative by voting for and/or serving on our Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee. We also aim to be a positive force in our community, supporting vital organizations such as the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA, Blue Star Families, San Diego Humane Society, and more.

Frontwave Credit Union is just one of more than 86,000 credit unions in the world serving 291 million Members in 118 countries. Whether our Members are well off or less fortunate, from villages or cities, in communities at peace or in conflict, credit unions are present across cultures and languages, helping Members turn hopes and dreams into reality. With access to a safe, convenient place to save their money and secure affordable loans, Members from all walks of life can realize their dreams and create new opportunities for themselves, from starting micro-businesses to building homes and educating their children.

The theme for this year’s International Credit Union Day is “building financial health for a brighter tomorrow,” which speaks to how the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge the financial well-being of credit union Members around the globe, and how we as credit unions are helping Members rebuild their lives financially.

Whether it’s providing free financial education, assisting community organizations like the San Luis Rey Mission through the Paycheck Protection Program, or giving Members like Chris Vaughan a second chance despite previous financial struggles, Frontwave Credit Union remains dedicated to helping our Members and our community achieve their financial dreams today and every day.
